Objectives: In this study, spinal cord injured patients were examined by ultasonography in order to detect any gallbladder stasis, gallbladder stones and to evaluate the gallbladder emptying fraction compared to healthy subjects.

Subjects and methods: 29 patients of whom 6 were tetraplegic and 23 paraplegic were compared to demographically similar healthy controls. They were injured between the years 1992and 2000. The subjects underwent fasting ultrasonography to determine the incidence of  stasis plus gallstones and then emptying fraction after a fatty meal.

Results: Upper gastrointestınal system symptoms were present in 58% of the patients. The most prevalent complaint was dyspepsia.None of the patients had stasis or stones but fasting volume and emptying fraction was lower in SCI patients than the controls (p<0.05). These parameters were again lower in the patients  whose neurologic levels were above T10  than the ones below (p>0.05).

Conclusion: This study doesn’t confirm the increased prevalence of gallstones after spinal cord injury but fasting volume and ejection fraction seems to be lower compared to healthy subjects.
