The Role of Degeneration Process in Intervertebral Disc in Lumbar Disc Herniaton Development The main pathology is intervertebral disc rupture in lumbar disc herniation (LDH). This pathology may be a result of developing disc degeneration.  The aim of this study was to determine the role of disc degeneration in LDH development. Sixty patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH), fourty control, total 100 cases were included in this study. Diagnosis of LDH was based on McCullough diagnostic criteria. Direct radiograhies of knees (anteroposterior and lateral) were taken in all cases. The radiologic findings were evaluated single blinded. The ratio of cases with gonarthritis in patients with LDH was 96.6 %, in control group it was 77.5 % (p=0.006). It was found that the risk of developing LDH in cases with gonarthritis was 8.4 times more than in cases without gonarthritis. As a result, it can be suggested that LDH is a consequence of disc degeneration.
