The Radiologic Features of Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis  Insulin is among the most important hormones in normal skeleton growth because it stimulates bone matrix and formation of cartilage. The radiographic features of osteoarthritis (OA) -the most common joint disease- are articular cartilage degeneration (joint space narrowing, geode formation) and repair activity of bone and cartilage (osteophystosis, and subcondral sclerosis). This study was designed to investigate whether radiographic features of knee OA in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 differ from those in nondiabetic controls. Knee radiographs of 30 female patients with diabetes and knee OA were compared with those of 30 female osteoarthritic control patients who had similar characteristics. The evaluation of the radiographs were done independently by 2 doctors who were blinded to the patient’s identity. Kellgren Lawrence score and severity of subcondral sclerosis, osteophytosis, geode formation and joint space narrowing in each compartment were rated . There was no statistical difference in any of the parameters between the 2 groups. In conclusion, this study suggests that diabetes or insulin resistance do not make a significant difference on radiologic features of OA. It can be further investigated with a larger group.
