The present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between physical activity and body composition on bone mineral density (BMD) in female prepubertal gymnasts and sedantary controls. Subjects were 14 female prepubertal gymnasts (age 10.1±1.2) and 7 healthy sedantary controls (age 10.9±0.9). Whole body BMD and body composition were measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), Lunar DPX-IQ. Height, body weight, body mass index, whole body BMC (g), whole body BMD (g/cm2), whole body BMD/height (g/cm3), lean body mass (LBM)(g), fat body mass (FBM)(g), LBM/weight, FBM/weight were evaluated. The gymnasts were significantly lower in height, weight, body mass index, FBM and FBM/weight compared with controls (p<0.05). The gymnasts had similar whole body BMD with the control group (p=0.699). But height normalized BMD measures were significantly higher in the gymnasts than the controls (p<0.05). There was not any significant difference in LBM between two groups (p=0.236). However LBM/weight was higher in the gymnasts than the controls (p<0.05). According to the regression analysis LBM was found to be the best independent predictor of whole body BMD. In conclusion, gymnastics training was associated with greater BMD measures, and this was related with high LBM of the prepubertal gymnasts.
