Our aim was to analyse bone mineral density (BMD), frequency of osteoporosis and to investigate the risk factors for bone loss in female patients with long standing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). BMD was measured at lumbar spine and femoral neck by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in 37 RA patients and in 30 healty age and sex matched control group. The frequency of osteoporosis in the RA patients was 35.1% at lumbar spine and 32.4% at femoral neck. Seventy-eight % of the RA patients were in postmenopausal period. Their mean age was 59.4 years, disease duration was 9.6 years. The frequency of bone loss in the RA patients was statistically high according to the control group (p<0.001). The risk factors for osteoporosis were age and impaired physical activity at lumbar spine, age and body mass index at femoral neck. There was no correlation between the previous use of corticosteroids and osteoporosis.
