Hypermobility in the outpatients referred to the physical therapy clinic-The hypermobility syndrome is characterized by the occurence of musculoskletal symptoms in hypermobile subjects in the absence of demonstrable systemic rheumatological disease. To assess the occurence and relationship with age, sex, diagnosis and physical examination in outpatients who referred to the hospital, we prospectively evaluated 302 patients (71 male, 231 female) for joint hypermobility. According to Beighton criteria, sixteen women 8% 6.9) and one man (% 1.4) had joint hypermobilty (>4 points on a 9 points scale). The incidence of hypermobilty was % 5.6 (seventeen patients) in all patients. As the average age of the total population interviewed was 48.4 years, the average age of the patients with joint hypermobility was 29.5 years. Joint hypermobility was diminished with ageing (p<0.001). Marked differences were present between the sexes, females having as greater degree of joint hypermobility than males. Especially, there was a statistically significant association between joint hypermobility and fibromiyalgia (p<0.001). İn addition, a positive correlation existed between the mobility score and loose skin or hernias, temporamandibuler crepitus and pain, passive internal rotation of the hips greater than 45, passive dorsiflexion of the ankle beyond 15, pes planus (p<0.05). At the end of the study, we consider that it is important for physicians to recognize this problem to ensure correct diagnosis and treatment because joint hypermobility may mimic rheumatic diseases.
