Association of knee and hand osteoarthritis in women and affect of predisposition factors - The purpose of this study was to examine the coexistence of osteoarthritis (OA)'in hand and knee joints and to detect the predisposing factors for this coexistence in female population which waas under the risk of generalized OA. The severity of OA was evaluated by Kellgren and Lawrence, Ledingham, Modify Thomas scales in 109 patients.
OA in hand was observed to be coexisted least frewuently with the involvement of right knee and lateral tibiofemoral compartment. The most important predisposing factor in coexistency was the age of the patient. Polyarticular involvement in hands was the second most important factor especially in coexistence of OA in hands and knee in all but coexistence of OA in carpometacarpal joint and lateral tibiofemoral compartment ivolvement. O significant relationship was found between the duration of disease and comcomitant involvement of knee compartments and proximal interphalangeal and first corpometacarpal joints. There was also significant relationship between Heberden's nodes and concomitant involvement of knee compartments and distal interphalangeal joints. We believe that the findings of this study will enlighten the definition and classification of the disease and its predisposing factors.
