Correlation of the scales that are used in the evaluation of the scales that are used in evaluation of the anklylosing spondilitis patients: Ankylosing spondilitis (AS) is a chronic, systemic, inflammatory disease with an unknown etiology. It can produce severe disability by impariring functional activites; causing fatigue and psychological disturbances. The aim of the study is to determine the correlation of four scales which are used to assess disease activity and disability states. Twentyfour patients were included to the study who had refferred to the Rheumatological Rehabilitation Unit of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the Medical Faculty of Istanbul. Bath AS Functional Index (BASFI), Bath AS Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Multidimensional Assessment Fatigie Scale (MAF) and Beck Depression Scale were used in the study. Pearson Correlation Coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation between the scales. BASDAI and MAF were correlated significantly (p<0.001, r=0.77). BASFI, MAF and BASDAI were moderately correlated (p=0.007, r=0.53, p=0.003, r=0.57, respectively). None of the scales had any correlation with Beck Depression Scale (p>0.05). These data indicates that fatigue is correlated mostly with disease activity. Functional impairment, disease activity and fatigue in AS have no significant effect on the patients psychological status.
