The Correlations Between Cross-Sectional Areas of Paraspinal Muscles and Clinical, Radiological Findings in Patients with Low Back Pain. In this study, we aimed to investigate the correlations between cross-sectional area of paraspinal muscles and clinic, radiological findings in patients with low back pain. A total 61 patients (mean age: 41.6±15.2) and 36 controls (mean age: 45.8±13.8) were included in the study. 49 patients were found to have disc protrusions by the computerizedtomography. Right and left cross-sectional areas of paraspinal muscles of the patients were 3402.8±397.6 and 3463.2±422 respectively. In female and male patients, the pain scores by Visual Analogue Scale were 81±3.9 and 75±4.3 respectively. The differences were significant in the cross-sectional areas between the patients and controls. The correlation coefficient found between the patients' ages and right/left cross-sectional areas were (r:-833) and (r:-804) respectively. The pain score and the cross-sectional areas were significantly different in female and male patients (p<0.05). These cross-sectional areas in the patients with DH were significantly small than that of in the patients without DH (p<0.05). In conclusion significantly diminished cross-sectional areas were found in patients with low back pain. This finding was found to be more definite in females and patients with DH.
