Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the urodynamic findings in patients with spinal cord injury and the correlation between the findings and the injury level.
Materials and Methods: One hundred three patients attending to our spinal cord injury inpatient unit of Istanbul 70th Year Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Education and Research Hospital were included in the study. The injury level and the type of the injury, complete or incomplete, has been determined according to the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) protocol. The urodynamic findings of the detrussor and sphincter function has been noted and the correlation between the ınjury level and the detrussor dısfunction has been analyzed.
Results: Thirty one percent (31%) of the patients with thoracal cord injury and 29% of the patients with lumbar cord injury had acontractile detrussor (AD). There was no statistically significant difference found between bladder type and injury level (p>0,05). In patients wiht complete injury; the ratio of overactive detrussor / overactive sphincter (OD/OS) was hıgh. In patients with incomplete injury; the ratio of overactive detrussor / normo active sphincter (OD/NS) was high. The difference between these rations was found statistically significant (p<0,05). A contractile detrussor was determined in twenty nıne percent of the patients with complete injury and twenty-two percent of the patients with incomplete ınjury. The frequency of AD was not statistically sıgnificant according to the type of injury.
Conclusion: Our study has shown that detrussor and sphincter function of the patients with spinal cord ınjury can not be determined exactly according to the ınjury level and the type of the ınjury, complete or incomplete, and to determine the type of the detrussor urodynamıc examination has to be made.
