Renal abscess is a localized collection of purulant material inside the parenchyma of the kidney. It is seen more commonly in patients with underlying urinary tract diseases or those with diabetes mellitus. In addition, patients with spinal cord injuries as a result of frequent urinary tract infections and urethral catheterization, are at considerable risk of developing renal abscess. In such patients, unfortunately, sensory loss may lead to late or even incorrect diagnosis. Early and correct diagnosis are essential factors in the outcome of renal and perinephric abscesses.
